If you’re a student of personal development, you know the Jim Rohn building your network marketing business seminar is an all-time classic.

When it comes to master motivators or someone who can share thoughts and insights to expand your mind there is no better. When I first started in network marketing, as most networkers, I made personal development a focal point and one of the first people I followed was in fact Jim Rohn.

So I decided to share some notes from his all time classic seminar in one place so you can refer back to it.

If you’re not familiar with Jim Rohn, he’s an author, motivational speaker and entrepreneur who has helped too many people to count take their lives to the next level.

His information is timeless and so many credit him for helping them achieve their success. From people like Tony Robbins to many of the most influential people… have all called Jim Rohn a mentor.

Jim Rohn How to Build a Network Marketing Business Cheat Sheet

Mr. Rohn shares that he was  an Idaho Farm boy from humble beginnings whose success took him around the world.

He was introduced to health and nutrition early in life. And network marketing is where he learned that you can start at the bottom and go to the top, part time. It revolutionized his life.

Mr. Rohn speaks about how important it is to have the right philosophy, which drives you to do what it takes. If you don’t have it, then nothing works.

Early Lessons in Network Marketing

1. Discovery of a unique product.

You want a differentiated product in the market place.

2. Profits are better than wages.

Jim mentions that he learned that:

  • Wages make you a living.
  • Profits make you a fortune.

Network marketing is the mechanism or vehicle to do this (profit).

Jim Rohn’s Start in Network Marketing

Jim was first introduced to the world of network marketing by his mentor Mr. Shoaff, who recruited him. He became a distributor for AbundaVita. When he was recruited Mr Shoaff said he can start part time. Devote 10-15 hours per week where you’re making a profit.

So for all new distributors, Mr. Rohn says that you can say to people, “I’m working full-time on my job and part time on my fortune.”

He found a way to make a fortune, not just a living. All through network marketing.

Your vision – imagine what life will be like…

If you wake up in the morning and get to go to work on your fortune. Not just work to pay bills.

The First Goal for Network Marketing

Mr. Rohn mentioned a concept called the magic of part time…

The Magic Of Part Time

  • What this means is you want to earn as much working on your fortune, part time… as you make in your full time job. Then you have a powerful story and testimonial (more on this in a minute).

And if you continue to chip away at it, it won’t take long before you are making as much part time working on your fortune as you are full time working on your job.

Jim Rohn did was making half as much in network marketing as he was in his job in only 6 months.

The Second Goal for Network Marketing

Once you’ve achieved that first goal, the second goal is:

Make twice as much money part-time working on your fortune as working on full time job.

Mr. Rohn achieved this goal in less than a year.

A Powerful Story

Once you get to the point where you’re making more working part time than your full time job you now have a powerful story.

Would you like to hear my story? He would say that to them after he said he’s making twice part time as full time.

Of course everybody he said that to wanted to hear his story.

Dilemma

The dilemma for Mr. Rohn was that he didn’t want to go full time in his business because he didn’t want to give up his electrifying story.

This is a good problem to have, isn’t it?

But it was so powerful that he held on for a long time and then finally gave up his full time job.

It was exciting to go to work full time on his fortune.

The Greatest Recruiting Tool

An extra $1000 per month can change a person’s life.

Mr. Rohn gave an example where he said:

“Someone says: “You’ve been on 3 vacations this year.” And he’d say, :I’ve got this lil part time thing going.” They’d ask: “what’s that?”

Another example is someone would say: “You bought two new cars, how did you do that?” Mr Rohn would say: “I’ve got this lil part time thing going.”

Just telling people how he was making extra money and others could see his lifestyle changing, the idea is that others would want to do what you’re doing and your opportunity sells itself.

A $1000 is enough part time where everyone wants to hear your story, and it’s not full time.

This gives you a classic invitation. It’s not just the money, but your lifestyle, what you do with the money.

The Philosophy That Changed Jim Rohn’s Life

Here are some amazing quotes from Jim Rohn that really drive the points home on philosophy and how important it is…

“It’s not what happens that determines your life future. It’s what you do about what happens.”

“We’re all in a little sailboat, and it’s not the blowing of the wind that determines your destination, it’s the set of the sail”

The same wind blows on us all. The wind of disaster, opportunity, change, favorable, unfavorable, political, social… Same blows on us all, but what determines is the set of the sail.

You have to set a different sail.

Mr. Rohn got rich the second 6 years of his business life because of new thinking. He picked up a new set of disciplines.

You can start making changes whenever you want, anybody, any time. If you want to change, you can do it, if you WISH to.

Opportunity

If you don’t know you can change everything, you go year after year not changing, not growing. You have to make the discovery.

It’s possible to make the next 3 years totally different than the last 3. It’s the set of the sail. You have to set the sail of your thinking.

“It’s not what happens. What happens, happens to everybody.”

Chevron asked Jim Rohn: “What do you think the next 10 years will be like?”

Jim: The next 10 years will be like about the next 10.

It will be opportunity mixed with difficulty. Sometimes there can be more of less of the other, but this won’t change.

After expansion comes recession and vice versa.

You have to be ready.

Profound Quotes From Jim Rohn’s

Here are some of Jim Rohn’s most profound quotes under philosophy from the seminar:

  • “For things to change, you have to change.”
  • “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better.”
  • “Don’t wish for less problems wish for more skills.”
  • “Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom.”
  • “The challenge helps you grow, wisdom helps you overcome the challenge.”
  • “You can do the most remarkable things no matter what happens. Humans can do the most remarkable things no matter what happens.”

Key Network Marketing Philosophies Jim Rohn Learned

Here are some of the paradigm shifts that will help to turbocharge your network marketing efforts. These are some philosophies that Mr. Rohn shares. These frameworks are timeless.

The Law of Averages

If you do something often enough a ratio will appear. In the sport of baseball we call this batting average.

Talk to 10 people 1 says yes, a ratio appears. Talk to 10 get 1. Once a ratio starts, it tends to continue.

Chances are if you talk to another 10 you’ll get another one and so on and so forth. If you can get 1 out of 10 you can compete. When you’re new, you make up in numbers, what you lack in skill.

Anybody can do this. All it takes is ambition.

The law of averages can be increased as you get better. Anybody can get better. Jim Rohn was able to get to 3 out of 10. And says if you can get above 3 or 4 you’re genius-level. You don’t have to bat a thousand to make big money. 1 -3 out of 10 is good and sufficient to make you rich beyond your wildest imagination.

How Jim Rohn pitched his family and friends:

“I got a new business and I’m getting about 3 out of 10 to join and I don’t mind you just come to the meeting and be one of the 7. You’re my friend you’ll do me a favor, not important that you join. It’s just important that you listen. A year from now if I’m doing well, I don’t want you to ask why I never told you.”

“I can say I gave you the opportunity. It doesn’t matter if you join, I need 10 to get 3. It doesn’t matter to me.”

The Law of Sewing and Reaping

The law of sewing and reaping is an amazing metaphor for network marketing. I absolutely love this story.

The sewer was ambitious.

He had excellent seed… (seed could be excellent opportunity or excellent story).

1) The sewer goes out to sew the seed, but the first part of the seed falls by the wayside and the birds get it.

The birds are going to get some of the seed.

Example: invite someone to a meeting and they don’t show, blame it on the birds.

The birds are gonna get some. You can chase the birds, but if you do, you leave the field which distracts from your future.

It’s just one of those things. One of the best things to say to yourself when things don’t work out:

“Isn’t that interesting.”

2) The sewer kept on sewing and if you keep going you can sew more because there aren’t enough birds.

If you keep sewing the law of averages will work for you.

3) The sewer keeps sewing the seeds and now the seed falls on rocky ground where the soil is shallow.

This time the little seed that falls in the ground starts to grow, but on the first hot day it withers away and dies.

This is the equivalent to when you get someone started in your business and then someone tells them something negative and they’re gone. Not showing up anymore to meetings. Not working the business anymore.

The hot weather is gonna get some. This is none of your making.

Just say: “Isn’t that interesting”

Don’t try to change this. Let it go. Don’t waste your time.

Some don’t stay. For those who leave. This is the mindset you need to have.

The secret to the ambitious sewer with good seed:

He kept on sewing. He had to discipline his disappointment. You must learn to discipline your disappointment. Some will stay and some won’t. This is the way it is.

4) Now the seed falls on thorny ground. And now the plant starts to grow but this time the thorns choke it to death and it dies.

The thorns are gonna get some. These are little distractions. Who knows. People who let little things cheat them out of big opportunities… It’s just the way it is.

The person who sews keeps on sewing the seed, sharing the story, giving invitation.

5) Finally the seed falls on good ground. “It always will if you keep sewing”

Share a good idea long enough and it will fall on good people.

30, 60 and 100% Type of People

Some of the good ground did 30%. And some of the ground did 60%. And some of the good ground did 100%.

This is just the way it is. Don’t get caught up in this. Don’t try to get the 30s to do 60. Let the 30s do 30 and let the 60s do 60 and 100 to do 100.

Skills That Changed Jim Rohn’s Life

1. Getting a customer, making a sale.

Sales isn’t technical. You just represent your product, talk about the products merits and get them to buy. But in network marketing it’s more sharing. Not as technical as traditional sales. You simply share what you’ve heard from someone else.

Learning sales multiplied Jim’s income 5X.

2. Recruiting

Introducing the business opportunity to different people. Learned how to give a good invitation: Formal and Informal. Follow up.

Once you start a new life, you need to nourish it and protect it. Like a mother and father (This is in relation to sponsoring a new rep).

Being a sponsor is like being a bridge, from dark to light, skeptic to faith, no confidence to getting confident. You’re helping people.

The bridge is what the recruiting magic is all about. You see something in them before they see it in themselves.

Recruiting pays big money. It’s the secret to wealth and fortune… The key to greatness.

Find a way to serve the many, for service to many leads to greatness for those who are interested. Greatness is helping others do well. In this business (network marketing) you’ve got a way to serve the masses.

We all have the same opportunities. But the difference maker is each person’s ambition and philosophy.

You can directly and indirectly affect the lives of many people in network marketing.

Your pay is in direct proportion to how many people you affect.

If you want trophies, recognition, high self esteem, to earn a fortune… you have to think in terms of how many people you can serve.

“Money isn’t everything, but it ranks right up there with oxygen.”

One of Zig Ziglar’s Philosophies:

If you help enough people get what they want you can have everything you want.

Self interest: wanting everything you want. Which is OK, but you can have it all if you hep others.

3. Organizing

Get people to work together. This is magic! Challenging, but it’s magic.

Everything magic is challenging.

“If 2 or 3 agree on a common purpose, nothing is impossible.”

When everybody is independent it’s more challenging. The powers of working together is shared testimonials. This might help you get the sale. It’s powerful.

Working by yourself is OK. But the advantages lie in organizing.

4. Promotion

Promotion pays staggering money.

The company comes up with major recognition. But you have to come up with small recognition. Reward people for small steps of progress.

Just recognizing people can be as simple as a pat on the back or hand shake. Getting people to do things that they wouldn’t ordinarily do by themselves.

Ingenuity. Network marketing is the best way to wake up your ingenuity.

You can get creative with your promotions by running special campaigns (i.e. spring, summer, winter, school teachers week).

Mr. Rohn would pick out a little category and make it go. Doesn’t matter what it is.

We all need to belong to something bigger than ourselves.

5. Communication

Learn how to conduct a meeting:

  • Identification.
  • Logic and reason.
  • Attack and confess.
  • Solution.
  • Simple deals on communication.

These skills might be uncomfortable at first. But do them again. And again. Learn communication. How to affect other people with words. Don’t be lazy in language.

How to affect other people with words. Don’t be lazy in language.

Use the gift of your own language.

  1. Train people how the business work.
  2. Teach – how life works.

We all need business skills and life skills for the 20th century. (We’re in the 21st century now)

The life skills are leadership skills and how to set goals.

6. The Ability to Inspire

Inspire means help people to look up higher than where they are and to get there.

Inspire them that it’s possible.

You inspire people by your own testimonial. If I can do it, you can do it.

Inspire by other people’s testimonial. If they can do it, you can do it.

The ability to inspire people that it’s possible. If I can do it, you can do it.

Get people to see themselves better than they are, richer, more capable. See themselves in the future.

In order to help your people you have to…

Get People to See Themselves as They Are

They have to know their mistakes. Help them correct their mistakes.

You have to do the same thing with your children. Tell them, you’ve messed up, but don’t leave them in the mess.

Paint a better picture. “Here’s what we can become with a couple more changes.”

Help our children see themselves better than they are, this is the better gift. Transport them to the future to see their opportunity. See the person they can become.

Jim Rohn’s mentor had this gift and helped him to see himself better than he was.

Then he started to believe and that’s how he got where he did.

Jim’s mentor said…

“One day you’re gonna walk into a room and you’ll hear one say, “that’s him, that’s the famous man.”‘

He didn’t believe it and it happened. He kept working hard on the disciplines as I outlined above and it happened.

Master these skills to inspire.

7. Work With the People Who Deserve it, Not the People Who Need it

Respond to deserve not to need. If you sew chances are good that you’ll reap. Respond to the people who take the first step. Teach people how to deserve your time and attention.

Tell your downline: “Mary you take this one step and I’ll take 2 steps, you take two steps and I’ll take 5 steps, but you don’t step, I don’t step.”

You step I step. You make a call, I back you up.

Learn to teach people to deserve your time and attention.

8. Learn to Work With Groups, Not Individuals

20% of the people, do 80% of the business.

As a sponsor, you can help 1000, but you can’t carry three on your back.

9. Don’t Expect the Pear Tree to Bear Apples

You can’t change people, but they can change themselves.

Skills buy you a future.

Courage, ambition. Willingness, ingenuity. You want people to try.

How to Live a Good Life

Mr. Rohn felt it is very important to live a good life. He said: “The greatest value in life is living a good life.”

Must figure out your whole life how to live a good life. Here are 5 things that you can do to live a good life:

  1. Productivity. If you don’t product you wont be happy.
  2. Good friends. Best support system in the world.
  3. Spirituality. Study practice and teach whatever is valuable to you.
  4. Don’t miss anything. Don’t miss the show, the game, the movie, the words, the song that nourishes the soul. It’s part of living a good life.
  5. The inner circle. Take care of them and they’ll take care of you. Inspire them and they’ll inspire you. The power to conquer the world comes from the inner circle.

If you live well, you’ll earn well. If you live well it will show up in your voice, face, the magnetism of your personality.

Ask for God’s help… We can all use a little help.

Conclusion

Jim Rohn is one of my mentors and an all-time great in the world of motivational speaking, personal development and entrepreneurship. Here’s is how he closed this amazing seminar…

“We have a chance as human beings to participate in the miracle process. You can go do this everyday as often as you wish.. changing somebody’s life. Rescuing somebody from oblivion. Building an organization second to none so that your name will appear in somebody’s testimonial.”
